Light and shadow (value)

Value = how light or dark a tone is. Mastering value matters more than mastering color. Squint at any masterwork and notice the few big shapes of light, midtone and shadow.

• Identify your light source first.
• Map shadows in three stages: form shadow (gradual), core shadow (darkest), cast shadow (sharp).
• Reserve your darkest darks for where light meets shadow at edges of form.
