The anatomy of a beat
~5 min read
Almost every modern beat is built from a small kit:
- Kick: low thump, drives the groove.
- Snare or clap: midrange crack, usually on beats 2 and 4.
- Hi-hats: high, fast, fill in the gaps - closed and open variants.
- Percussion: shakers, claps, rims, congas.
- 808: a sustained sub-bass tone, often pitched to the song's key.
