MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a 1983 standard that lets electronic musical instruments and computers send each other instructions about music. It is NOT audio - it is data.
A MIDI message says 'play note 60 (middle C) at velocity 100 on channel 1'. The receiving instrument decides what sound to make.
