Live sound has two systems: FOH (front of house) - what the audience hears - and monitors - what the performers hear.

That awful howl happens when a microphone picks up its own amplified sound and re-amplifies it - an infinite loop. Cure: aim mics away from speakers, lower monitor volume, or notch out the offending frequency with EQ.
