Microphones 101
~6 min read
A microphone turns sound (pressure waves) into electricity (voltage). Three main types matter in studios and live sound:
- Dynamic mics (SM57, SM58): rugged, handle loud sources, perfect on snares, guitar amps, and lead vocals on stage.
- Condenser mics (U87, AKG C414): sensitive, detailed, need phantom power (+48V). The classic studio vocal mic.
- Ribbon mics (Royer R-121): warm, smooth, fragile. Beloved on guitar amps and brass.
