Inversions and voicings

~5 min read

Same chord, different order of notes, very different feel. C major can be played as C-E-G (root position), E-G-C (1st inversion) or G-C-E (2nd inversion).

Producers and arrangers obsess over voicings because they control how smoothly chords flow into each other. Voice leading - keeping common notes still and moving others by small steps - is the secret of great-sounding chord progressions.
